If time is of the essence we do not want to go to the gym and spend two hours performing a workout that should technically only take 30 minutes to complete. From waiting to use gym equipment to the idle chit-chat of unfocused gym patrons, distractions can siphon away valuable minutes of an already limited time frame. There will always be challenges to your ability to focus during workout at the gym.

The Plan

Apply these basic pointers to prevent an unwarranted extended stays at the gym.

  • Come prepared– If not arriving at the gym completely dressed and ready to go, make sure to have everything needed to complete a workout once you arrive. This should include water, gloves, towel, etc. Packing your gym bag the night before to avoid rushing in the morning is a good idea. We all know what happens when we rush, we forget things.
  • Set a time limit- Decide how much time will be spent on each workout and then stick to it. Once working becomes a lifestyle habit, estimating the amount of time necessary to complete a workout will be second nature.
  • Don’t converse with others- Without being rude, try to keep conversations to a minimum. There are many tactful ways to avoid or end a conversation. A simple phrase like “I would love to talk to you but I have to be out of here by "x" time” is a polite way to avoid a long conversation.
  • Focus on each repetition- Performing each movement with concentration and focus on the targeted muscle(s) produces better results. When the mind-body (muscle) connection is established and each repetition is performed with a full range of motion, more muscle fibers can be stimulated and the exercise becomes more effective.
  • Plan your workouts and write them down- When going into the gym with a plan, which should always be the case, you can move smoothly through your workout. Knowing the sequence of exercises, the number of repetitions and the number of sets you plan to execute before you start allows you to give your undivided attention to the workout.
  • Have an alternate exercise- If a workstation is occupied having an alternate exercise will prevent waiting and wasting time.
  • Don’t try to do too much- Over-working or doing too much too soon can lead to injury. Injury is a sure way to lose momentum, lose commitment and derail a workout.

In Conclusion

Focus is crucial to getting in and out of the gym within the allotted time. With a solid plan and the right attitude each workout can be productive, spirited, and transformative. Exercise contributes to the improved health and lifestyles of many practitioners.
